May-November 2016

Alpena, MI – The Alpena Downtown Development Authority is pleased to announce that downtown Alpena has been selected to participate in the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) 2016 ‘Tip of the Mitt’ edition of Inside|Out.  Inside|Out brings high-quality reproductions of masterpieces from the DIA’s collection to outdoor venues and will be installed in downtown Alpena from May 16, 2016 through mid-November 2016.

Inside|Out has been in more than 200 communities over the past six years. During the 2016 season, Downtown Alpena will display 12 of these high-quality, full-size reproductions. Counted among the pieces making their way north are Bellows’ A Day in June, Copley’s Watson and the Shark, van Gogh’s Portrait of Postman Roulin and Wangboje’s Mother and Child. The DIA will install and de-install each piece on both public and private preapproved properties within downtown Alpena. (see map)

The DDA encourages community groups to plan activities focused on the Inside|Out works. Ideas from other communities include bike and walking tours, bus tours, talks at local libraries/museums, festivals and more. According to Lesslee Dort, Alpena DDA Executive Director, “We are very excited to be able to offer this treasure of art with our community and guests. The opportunity to have quality art on public view 24/7 from May through November is a wonderful gift. Within our twenty square blocks one could always find some of the best history, shopping, entertainment, restaurants & bars, service, reading, and art.  Now our guests will have world-renowned works of art just steps away from any downtown location.  We are grateful the DIA shares these exhibits beyond their immediate market.  Now, Alpena has a small slice of the greatness that can be found at the Detroit Institute of Arts!” The DDA believes this installation will be a catalyst for more art and culture displays within Downtown Alpena in the future.

The Inside|Out program is supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. A full map and brochure of the installation will be available as the installation date nears. The Alpena Downtown Development Authority was established by the City of Alpena in 1980. The primary goal of the DDA is to implement positive economic, physical, and aesthetic changes in downtown Alpena according to the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s National Main Street Program through a 4-committee structure.
